Definition of seizure

Type Definition 
Seizure 
  • Sudden change in behavior due to increased electrical activity in cerebral cortex 
Acute symptomatic seizure 
  • Seizure due to systemic injury 
    • Examples include metabolic derangements, drug or alcohol withdrawal 
  • Seizure due to documented brain injury  
    • Examples include stroke, encephalitis, head injury 
Unprovoked seizure 
  • Seizure due to known preexisting brain lesion, progressive nervous system disorder, or an unknown etiology 
Epilepsy 
  • > 2 unprovoked seizures > 24 hours apart 
  • At least 1 unprovoked seizure with high risk for future seizures over the next 10 years due to the underlying etiology
