Definition of meningitis and encephalitis

Type Clinical Features 
Meningitis   
  • Increased number of white blood cells (WBC) in CSF 
 
  • Inflammatory condition involving leptomeninges  and tissue surrounding brain and spinal cord 
 
  • Typically, with normal cerebral function 
  • Settings 
    • Community acquired 
    • Healthcare associated (occurs while hospitalized) 
Encephalitis 
  • Encephalopathy 
    • Altered consciousness persisting for longer than 24 h 
    • Change in personality or behavior 
    • Irritability 
    • Lethargy 
                             PLUS 
  • CNS inflammation (at least 2 of following) 
    • CSF pleocytosis (> 4 white cells per μL) 
    • EEG findings suggestive of encephalitis 
    • Fever 
    • Neuroimaging findings suggestive of encephalitis 
    • Seizures or focal neurological findings attributable to the brain parenchyma
