  • Acute
    • Symptoms for 2 weeks – 3 months
  • Chronic
    • Symptoms for > 3 months, onset > 6 months

Definition by Rome Criteria

  • Loose stools rarely present without using laxatives
  • Insufficient criteria for diagnosing irritable bowel syndrome
  • Must have > 2 of the following
    • Lumpy or hard stools*
    • Manual maneuvers to facilitate bowel movement*
    • Sensation of anorectal obstruction/blockage* 
    • Sensation of incomplete evacuation*
    • Spontaneous bowel movements < 3 times/week
    • Straining*

* Present in > 25 % of defecations
