Definition & Classification of UTI

Term Clinical features 
Cystitis 
  • Infection of the bladder and urinary tract 
  • Referred to as uncomplicated UTI 
Pyelonephritis 
  • Infection of kidney and upper urinary tract 
Complicated UTI 
  • Acute UTI extending beyond bladder wall with following 
    • Chills or rigors 
    • Costovertebral angle tenderness (CVAT) 
    • Fatigue or malaise 
    • Fever (> 99o F, 37.7oC) 
    • Flank pain 
    • Pelvic or perianal pain in men (possible prostatitis)
