Background and definitions of bone loss

Type Clinical features 
Fragility fracture 
  • Fractures after a fall from a standing height or less without trauma 
  • Most commonly in spine, hip, wrist, humerus, rib, and pelvis 
Osteoporosis   
  • Bone mineral density (BMD) at spine, hip or forearm with T score > 2.5 standard deviations (SD) below young adult mean  
  • Increased skeletal fragility 
  • Low bone mass 
  • Microarchitectural disruption 
Low bone mass  
  • Also known as osteopenia 
  • BMD at spine, hip, or forearm with T score between 1-2.5 SD below young adult mean 
Osteomalacia 
  • Under-mineralization of bone 
  • Usually due to vitamin D deficiency or hypophosphatemia
