Hematochezia

  • Most commonly maroon or bright red blood per rectum (BRBPR)
  • Can be due to small bowel bleeding or massive upper GI bleeding
  • Blood from left side of colon usually bright red
  • Blood from right side of colon usually dark or maroon color

Minimal BRBPR

  • Small amount of intermittent bright red blood
  • Usually suggest lesion near anal canal
  • Can present as blood on toilet paper or few drops of blood in toilet after defecation
