Type  Clinical Features 
Physiologic reflux 
  • Postprandial symptoms 
  • Short-lived 
  • Asymptomatic 
  • Rarely during sleep 
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)   
  • Reflux of stomach contents into esophagus, oral cavity, or lung  
  • Contents with pH < 4.0  
  • Causes symptoms and/or complications 
Non-acid reflux 
  • Reflux of gastric contents with pH > 4.0 
Classification of GERD (based on appearance on EGD) 
  • Erosive esophagitis 
    • Visible breaks in distal esophageal mucosa seen on endoscopy (EGD) with or without symptomatic GERD 
    • Nonerosive reflux disease (endoscopy negative) 
    • Significant GERD symptoms without visible injury on EGD
