Term Characteristics 
Nausea 
  • Can occur alone or with vomiting, dyspepsia, or other GI symptoms 
  • Unpleasant desire to vomit 
Vomiting 
  • Reflex that allows a person to expel ingested gastric contents 
Retching 
  • Sensation of nausea and vomiting without complete projection of gastric contents 
Regurgitation 
  • Esophageal contents returning to hypopharynx with little effort
