Definition of stroke and TIA

Type Clinical Features 
TIA 
  • Sudden onset of focal neurological symptoms/signs lasting < 24 hours  
    • Due to transient decrease in blood flow causing focal brain, spinal cord, or retinal ischemia without acute infarction 
Stroke 
  • Patient with evidence of infarction 
  • Acute neurological injury  
    • Complete hemianopia 
    • Inability to walk 
    • Motor deficits limiting ability 
    • Severe aphasia 
    • Visual or sensory deficits
